Son of the late Anna Hall Ryan and John V. Ryan, Sr.

Husband of Mary Emily (Wilson) Ryan. Father of John V. "Jake" Ryan, III, Barbara Rossiter, Mildred E. Garcia

A respected business owner in New Castle, he founded the Rose Hill Drum Company in the 1950s and continued in its operation until his retirement.

Chief Ryan was perhaps best known for his devotion to fire service in his community. In 1929, at 17 years of age, he joined the Holloway Terrace Volunteer Fire Company, where he celebrated 75 years of membership in September 2004.

During his exceptional career as a firefighter, he was the chief of Holloway Terrace for 24 years, and served as president of the New Castle County Firemen's Association (1952), president of the Delaware State Fire Chiefs Association (1957), and president of the Delaware Volunteer Firemen's Association (1961). In 1963, he was elected as the first president of the newly formed Delaware Valley Fire Chiefs Association.

Chief Ryan was honored as Delaware Fireman of the Year in 1983 and was inducted into the Delaware Firefighters Hall of Fame in 1985. He was further recognized for his many years of devoted service to his community when he was named Firefighter of the Year by the New Castle Area Kiwanis Club.
